Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do warmups include?
A: Our warmups cover strength, stamina, agility, and flexibility. Here’s a snapshot:
-
Strength: Push-ups, crunches, squats.
-
Stamina: Star jumps, jogging, burpees.
-
Agility: Lateral jumps, single-leg hops, tuck jumps.
We mix in routines like:
-
Old School: Classic strength and stretching (20–30 minutes).
-
Tabata: High-intensity intervals (4 minutes each, with music).
-
Equipment-Based: Pads, ropes, stepping blocks, and more.
-
Stations/Circuits: Rotating exercises with fun music.
We also add sparring, “Boxercise” drills, and personalise exercises for anyone with mobility or other challenges.

Q: Is this MMA?
A: Yes, but in a traditional way. Jujitsu started with the Samurai and combines striking, grappling, throws and ground techniques. It’s not focused on cage fighting but on discipline and respect—like bowing, speaking Japanese, and wearing traditional uniforms (Gi).

Q: Will I get hurt?
A: We take safety seriously. Training involves controlled contact to prepare you for real situations, but there’s no risk of serious injury. At most, you might feel sore or get a small bruise. Everyone leaves in one piece—and stronger!

Q: Do you compete?
A: in 2024 we were invited to compete in an all styles competition in North Devon. Our focus is self defence but we felt it was time to finally enter a competition hosted by Union Karate-Do. 7 of our 10 entrants came away with trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Kata (Karate) and Kobudo Kata/ forms.
We will consider future competitions but primarily our focus is on what we do within the Dojo.
Q: Is this good for women?
A: Absolutely! Our techniques focus on skill, not strength, and women often excel because of this. Nearly half our students are women. Self-defense is valuable for everyone—why not give it a try?

Q: Is this Martial Art better than others?
A: No martial art is “better.” It’s about finding what suits you. Effectiveness comes from your commitment, a good instructor, and how well the style matches your goals.
Q: What should I bring to class?
A: For your first class, just wear comfy clothes like a t-shirt and jogging bottoms. Bring water, a towel, and anything you need for medical reasons. If you stick with us, you can get a discounted Gi (uniform) or bring your own.
Q: What ages do you teach?
A: Most students start at 8 years old, but younger kids may join if approved by the instructor. Adults of all ages are welcome too—even past 50—as long as training suits them.
Q: Are there changing rooms and parking?
A: Yes, we have separate changing areas and on-site parking. Bags and personal items stay safely in the Dojo.
